Journal of Forest and Livelihood Vol. 1
July 2001
Being the inception edition of the Journal, a broad range of issues have been addressed, focusing on four broad themes within Nepal’s forestry sector. In relation to forest management, the authors have explored mechanisms with which the sector might effectively integrate community forestry with a broader natural resource management system and move towards active forest management. Regarding livelihoods, economic opportunities and equity, the prospects and challenges for forest-based livelihoods have been explored, both through community forestry and through the relation of non-timber forest products to Nepal’s policy and market systems. Institutions and social processes have been addressed in investigating different approaches and facilitation of adaptive and collaborative management and monitoring systems. Finally, policy and governance has been discussed in an analysis of the role of civil society in strengthening local rights in Nepal’s forestry sector.
